Purpose
Tanai Prathapam - 2020
Many parts of the world are suffering due to various problems that relate to the basic necessities, which are food, water, and shelter. Part of shelter is access to a steady stream of affordable energy. As civilization is becoming more advanced, the want for technology is slowly turning into a need. 789 million people – predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa, are living without access to electricity, and hundreds of millions more only have access to very limited or unreliable electricity. It is estimated that only 28 percent of healthcare facilities have access to energy in sub-Saharan Africa, yet energy is critically needed to keep people connected at home and to run life-saving equipment in hospitals especially because of the Covid-19 pandemic present. Our goal is to provide a viable solution to this problem that can improve the situation as much as possible or possibly even solve it.

The Challenge
Although it may not be very advanced technology, just having an extra source of light at night can significantly improve someone's life. The big idea for this challenge is building communities. We think this is important for not only this challenge but for anything because, when you do something for someone or just do anything in general, your goal should be to get to know more people interact with the people around you. We are communicative animals, so if we aren’t communicating, we aren’t doing justice to who we are.
The question for this challenge is, how can living conditions affect community? One of the things that can prevent a healthy community from emerging is the conditions that the people living in that community are in. According to several studies, poor living conditions negatively affect both a persons physical and mental health. Poor living conditions doesn’t necessarily mean only physical living conditions at home, but it also relates to education and nutrition as well. Additionally in places like urban slums, people live in close proximity to each other, which in addition to poor sanitation (also a part of poor living conditions) can cause the spread of disease which adds to costs, prevents people from working, and threaten the well-being of the community members. The actual challenge for this project is to solve at least one aspect of those problems by engineering something that could improve someone’s life with better living conditions, which in turn improves the rest of their life too. Our part in solving this problem will be to create something that could provide affordable energy to at least one person to improve their life through better living conditions. That is just one step into improving the worlds problems; one step is better than none. (Visit the gallery if you are interested in seeing our progress so far) |
